Our mission at the Hungarian Language Program of UPMS-ISC (University of Pécs Medical School, International Studies Center) is to deliver and cultivate high-quality, cutting edge Hungarian instruction:

  • Teaching Hungarian as a Foreign Language
  • Curriculum Development
  • Professional Development for Teachers

The main goal of the Hungarian Language Hub at the International Studies Center is to have students acquire the Hungarian language effectively by using innovative teaching methods and developing an engaging curriculum for. We strive to train our Hungarian Language instructors, and we also organize programs and courses that provide opportunities for active language use in addition to effective language learning year around. We are determined to reach our goals with the help of Model-based Education™.

About our courses in general:

  • In accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), we offer language instruction at six language proficiency levels.
  • Students who are not beginners can take a placement test (oral and written) to find their current levels.
  • Learning takes place in small groups (minimum of 4 and maximum of 12 students per group).
  • Our teachers use the Model-based Education™ method, which focuses on practical language use and follows native language patterns.
  • We teach from our own textbook series, using the MagyarOK curriculum.
  • After completing the course and passing the oral and written exams,  students receive a certificate indicating the credit points earned.

A foreigner can communicate in Hungarian once he or she is able to process and transfer information independently. It is not worth learning just a little bit of a new language because it won’t give you the success of being able to use language independently. Fortunately, you can master Hungarian with our help! During the learning process, it is vital that teachers and students work together as a team to find a path that helps each individual become an independent language user. The basic premise of this method is that active language use leads to language proficiency. The model-based language teaching method provides students with a structure that draws on the language patterns of native speakers at each stage of learning. Following this model allows students to reach high-level language competence through effective learning.

The method was developed by Szilvia Szita and Katalin Pelcz.
